At last I know why I never made a cent on those two affiliate products I tried to market! What are obvious ‘tricks of the trade’ for experienced marketers can sometimes evade new guys for years. Recently, while doing some keyword research I had an insight that could explain of lot of people’s lack of success with affiliate marketing . While I was trying out Howie Schwartz’s Conversation Domination techniques, I opened Google’s Keyword Tool to do some analysis.
After playing around a little with various word combinations I finally got product-specific, and typed in Myvu Crystal and, hey presto, I got 3600 results, four times more searches than the general keyword search dug up.
Actually, analysis sounds a little bit too structured for what I do, which at the moment is more like hit and miss guess work. Anyhow, I had decided I was going to focus on trying to sell Myvu Video Goggles, you know, the glasses that make ipods screens into 60ft tv’s.
Ok, so I started to type my keywords in the Google keyword tool and immediately typed in the obvious … and the very general … video eyewear, video glasses etc. The results were pretty bad with between 100 and 880 searches per month. I figured there had to be more than 880 people searching for this cool new gadget. So after playing around a little with various word combinations I finally got product specific, and typed in Myvu Crystal, Crystal being one particular brand of Myvu Eyewear, and hey presto, I got 3600 results, four times more searches than I had generated with the general keyword phrase.
So what did I learn from this experience. I learned something that probably should have been quite obvious to me but never was, that people out there are searching for specific products. They’re looking for makes and models, myvu crystal eyewear, K2 apache skis etc. These are usingn ‘buying keywords’ to search google. These are the keywords that are most important for niche bloggers or affiliate marketers, because this is the market that is ready to take out their credit card and send you some affiliate cash.
Finding and focusing on these keywords for niche blogs or pay per click campaigns must be the fastest and more guaranteed way to secure better revenue results period.
